Constantine VI
Constantine VI (771–c. 797) was Byzantine emperor from 780 to 797, at first under the regency of his mother Irene. He was defeated by Khan Kardam of Bulgaria at Markellai in 792, and his divorce and remarriage alienated the church. In 797 Irene had him blinded and took the throne herself, becoming the first woman to rule Byzantium in her own name.
