Justinian II

669–711 · 7th century · Also known as Justinian Rhinotmetos

Justinian II was a Byzantine emperor of the Heraclian dynasty who reigned from 685 to 695 and again from 705 to 711. In 688 he agreed with the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik to share the revenues of Cyprus, and he campaigned against the Slavs of the Strymon, resettling many in Anatolia. Deposed and mutilated in 695, he regained the throne before being killed.
