Battle of Achelous

917 · 10th century · Also known as Battle of Anchialus (917) · Part of the Byzantine–Bulgarian war of 913–927

The Battle of Achelous was fought on 20 August 917 by the river Achelous, near Anchialus on the Black Sea coast of present-day Bulgaria. Tsar Simeon I of Bulgaria destroyed a large Byzantine army under Leo Phokas, one of the heaviest defeats in Byzantine history. The victory left Bulgaria the dominant power in the Balkans for the rest of Simeon's reign.
