Battle of Mokuʻōhai

1782 · 18th century

The Battle of Mokuʻōhai was fought in July 1782 near Keʻei in South Kona on the island of Hawaiʻi, between the forces of Kiwalaʻō, heir of Kalaniʻōpuʻu, and his cousin Kamehameha. Kiwalaʻō was killed, and the island was divided among Kamehameha, Keōua and other chiefs. It was Kamehameha's first major victory on his way to uniting the Hawaiian Islands.
