    The Marquess of Rockingham forms his second British ministry

    Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, took office in Great Britain at the head of a ministry that began negotiations to end the American War of Independence. His second premiership lasted four months.

    Rama I takes the throne and founds the Chakri dynasty

    The general Chao Phraya Chakri became king of Siam as Rama I and soon moved the capital across the river to Bangkok. His Chakri dynasty still reigns in Thailand today.

    Rama I founds Bangkok as Siam's new capital

    The city pillar of Bangkok was erected on the east bank of the Chao Phraya, marking the official founding of the new royal capital. It replaced Thonburi across the river.

  4. 7 August

    George Washington creates the Badge of Military Merit

    Washington established a purple cloth heart to honour enlisted soldiers for meritorious action. Revived in 1932 as the Purple Heart, it is now awarded to those wounded or killed in US service.

    Battle of Mokuʻōhai

    The Battle of Mokuʻōhai was fought in July 1782 near Keʻei in South Kona on the island of Hawaiʻi, between the forces of Kiwalaʻō, heir of Kalaniʻōpuʻu, and his cousin Kamehameha.
