Bangkok
Bangkok is the capital and largest city of Thailand, on the Chao Phraya river near the Gulf of Thailand. King Rama I founded it as the capital of the Chakri dynasty in 1782 on Rattanakosin island, opposite Taksin's capital at Thonburi, and laid it out on the model of Ayutthaya. It became the political, religious and commercial centre of Siam and the seat of modern Thailand's government.
