Taksin

1734–1782 · 18th century · Also known as King Taksin, Taksin the Great

Taksin was a Siamese general of Chinese descent who rallied resistance after the Burmese destroyed Ayutthaya in 1767 and was crowned king at Thonburi. In a series of campaigns he drove out the Burmese and reunified Siam, bringing rival regimes such as Phitsanulok, Phimai and Nakhon Si Thammarat under his rule. Deposed in 1782 amid accusations of erratic behaviour, he was executed, and his general Chakri became King Rama I.
