Faustin Soulouque

1782–1867 · 19th century · Also known as Faustin I

Faustin Soulouque was a Haitian general chosen president by the senate in 1847 as a supposedly pliable figure. He purged the mixed-race elite, proclaimed himself Emperor Faustin I in 1849 and built a lavish court. His repeated invasions of the Dominican Republic were defeated, and he was overthrown by Fabre Geffrard in 1859 and went into exile.
