Charles Rivière-Hérard

1789–1850 · 19th century

Charles Rivière-Hérard (1789–1850) was a Haitian army officer who led the Reform movement that overthrew President Jean-Pierre Boyer in 1843. As president from 1843 he faced the Dominican declaration of independence of February 1844 and failed to reconquer the east; peasant revolts and army discontent led to his overthrow in May 1844, and he died in exile in Jamaica.
