Charles Rigault de Genouilly was a French admiral who commanded the Franco-Spanish expedition against Vietnam in 1858. He attacked Da Nang in September 1858 and, when the campaign there stalled, sailed south and captured Saigon in February 1859, the first step in the French conquest of Cochinchina. He later served as Minister of the Navy from 1867 to 1870.
