1837–1917 · 19th century

Liu Yongfu was a Chinese soldier and leader of the Black Flag Army, which fought the French in northern Vietnam in the 1870s and 1880s. In 1895, when the Qing ceded Taiwan to Japan, he joined the short-lived Republic of Formosa and became its leader after President Tang Jingsong fled, continuing resistance from Tainan until he too fled to the mainland in October 1895.
