Charles James Napier

1782–1853 · 19th century

Sir Charles James Napier (1782–1853) was a British general who conquered Sindh in 1843. After defeating the Talpur mirs at Miani and Dubba near Hyderabad, he annexed the province and governed it until 1847, and he later served as commander-in-chief in India. The story that he announced the conquest with the one-word pun 'Peccavi' ('I have sinned') comes from Punch magazine.
