Talpur dynasty

1783 CE – 1843 CE · capital Hyderabad (Sindh)

A Baloch dynasty of mirs who ruled Sindh from Hyderabad, Khairpur and Mirpur until the British conquest of 1843.

Origins

The Talpurs were Baloch tribal chiefs who served as commanders of the Kalhora dynasty. After the Kalhoras killed several Talpur leaders, Mir Fateh Ali Khan Talpur defeated the last Kalhora ruler at the Battle of Halani in 1783 and took control of Sindh, receiving recognition from the Durrani Empire.

Rule and society

The Talpur mirs shared power among related branches, ruling from Hyderabad, Khairpur and Mirpur Khas as a family confederation. They maintained Sindh's Persian court culture and Baloch tribal military system, and built tombs and forts. Their territory controlled the lower Indus, which Britain wanted for trade and for access to Afghanistan.

Decline and legacy

The British forced treaties on the mirs, used Sindh during the First Anglo-Afghan War and then provoked war. Charles Napier defeated the Talpurs at Miani and Dubbo in 1843, annexing Sindh to the Bombay Presidency. The Khairpur branch survived as a princely state until 1955.
