Khairpur State

1783 CE – 1955 CE (approx.) · capital Khairpur

The Talpur Mirs' state in upper Sindh, the one Talpur principality to survive the British conquest of Sindh in 1843.

Origins

The Talpurs, a Baloch clan, overthrew the Kalhora rulers of Sindh at the Battle of Halani in 1783. The victors divided Sindh, and Mir Sohrab Khan Talpur took the northern share with his capital at Khairpur.

Rule and society

When the British conquered Sindh in 1843 after the Battle of Miani, Mir Ali Murad Khan of Khairpur had sided with them and kept his state, though he later lost land after being accused of forging a treaty. Khairpur was a Shia-ruled state with a 15-gun salute, a Sindhi-speaking population and an economy of dates, grain and cotton. The fort of Kot Diji guarded it.

Decline and legacy

Mir George Ali Murad Khan acceded to Pakistan in October 1947. Khairpur was merged into West Pakistan in 1955 and is now a district of Sindh.
