Archduke John of Austria

1782–1859 · 19th century · Also known as Archduke Johann of Austria, Archduke John

Archduke John of Austria was a Habsburg prince, son of Emperor Leopold II, who commanded Austrian armies against Napoleon and was a popular patron of Styria. His liberal reputation and marriage to a postmaster's daughter made him acceptable to the Frankfurt Parliament, which elected him Imperial Regent of Germany in 1848. He held the office until the provisional central power was dissolved in 1849.
