Battle of Paardeberg

1900 · 20th century · Part of the Second Boer War

The Battle of Paardeberg was fought from 18 to 27 February 1900 on the Modder River, in the Second Boer War. British forces under Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener surrounded Piet Cronjé's retreating army and, after a costly assault and a siege of the Boer laager, forced about 4,000 men to surrender. The defeat opened the way for the British capture of Bloemfontein in March 1900.
