Battle of Passchendaele

1917 · 20th century · Also known as Third Battle of Ypres · Part of the First World War

The Battle of Passchendaele, or Third Battle of Ypres, was a British-led offensive on the Western Front in Belgium from July to November 1917. Fought in heavy rain over ground churned into mud by shelling, it gained only a few miles before Canadian troops took the ridge and village of Passchendaele, at a cost of hundreds of thousands of casualties on both sides.
