Battle of Petrovaradin

1716 · 18th century · Also known as Battle of Peterwardein · Part of the Austro-Turkish War (1716–1718)

The Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716 at the fortress of Peterwardein, now part of Novi Sad in Serbia, at the start of the Austro-Turkish War of 1716–1718. Prince Eugene of Savoy defeated a much larger Ottoman army under the grand vizier Silahdar Ali Pasha, who was killed. The victory opened the way to the capture of Temeswar in 1716 and Belgrade in 1717 and to the Treaty of Passarowitz.
