Novi Sad

Novi Sad is the second-largest city of Serbia and the capital of the province of Vojvodina, on the Danube opposite the Petrovaradin fortress. Founded at the end of the 17th century, it became a centre of Serb culture under Habsburg rule. In November 2024 the collapse of a railway station canopy there killed sixteen people and set off nationwide protests.
