Battle of Suomussalmi

1939–1940 · 20th century · Part of the Winter War

The Battle of Suomussalmi was fought in the forests of north-eastern Finland from December 1939 to January 1940, during the Winter War. Finnish ski troops under Colonel Hjalmar Siilasvuo cut the road-bound Soviet 163rd and 44th Divisions into isolated pockets, known as motti, and destroyed them, capturing large amounts of equipment. The victory became a symbol of Finnish resistance against a far larger enemy.
