Winter War
The Winter War was fought between the Soviet Union and Finland from November 1939 to March 1940, after Finland refused Soviet demands for territory. Finnish forces inflicted heavy losses on the much larger Red Army, but the Moscow Peace Treaty of March 1940 forced Finland to cede Karelia, including Viipuri, and other areas, while keeping its independence.
