Battle of Surabaya

1945 · 20th century · Part of the Indonesian National Revolution

The Battle of Surabaya was fought in October and November 1945 in the East Javanese port of Surabaya between Indonesian nationalist fighters and British and British Indian troops sent to accept the Japanese surrender. After the British brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby was killed, British forces launched a major assault from 10 November and took the city after weeks of fighting with heavy Indonesian losses. Its fierce resistance rallied support for the republic, and 10 November is commemorated as Heroes' Day.
