Budi Utomo
Budi Utomo was the first modern Indonesian political organisation, founded on 20 May 1908 in Batavia by students of the STOVIA medical school. Led mainly by Javanese aristocrats and officials, it promoted education and Javanese culture rather than independence, and it later took seats in the colonial People's Council. Its founding date is celebrated in Indonesia as National Awakening Day.
