Battle of the Great Plains

203 BCE · 3rd century BCE · Also known as Battle of Campi Magni · Part of the Second Punic War

The Battle of the Great Plains was fought in 203 BCE in the Bagradas valley of North Africa, in present-day Tunisia. Scipio Africanus defeated a Carthaginian and Numidian army under Hasdrubal Gisco and Syphax, which included about 4,000 Celtiberian mercenaries who fought to the last. The defeat led Carthage to recall Hannibal from Italy.
