Battle of Turnhout (1789)

1789 · 18th century · Part of the Brabant Revolution

The Battle of Turnhout was fought on 27 October 1789 in the town of Turnhout, in the Austrian Netherlands, where the patriot army of the Brabant Revolution under Jan Andries van der Mersch defeated Austrian troops. The victory encouraged risings across the provinces, and by December the Austrians had been driven from most of the country, leading to the proclamation of the United Belgian States in January 1790.
