Baz Bahadur

r. 1555–1561 · 16th century

Baz Bahadur was the last sultan of Malwa, ruling from Mandu in central India. More devoted to music than to war, he is remembered for his romance with the singer Rupmati, celebrated in later poetry and painting. In 1561 the Mughal general Adham Khan defeated him and took Mandu, and Rupmati took her own life. Baz Bahadur later entered Akbar's service.
