Bayuda Desert
The Bayuda Desert is a rocky desert in northern Sudan, lying within the great bend of the Nile between Khartoum and Dongola. Caravan routes crossed it as a shortcut between the river's stretches. In 1885 a British column crossed it in a vain attempt to relieve Gordon at Khartoum, fighting at Abu Klea on the way.
