Bechara El Khoury

1890–1964 · 20th century · Also known as Bishara al-Khuri

Bechara El Khoury was a Maronite lawyer and politician who became the first president of independent Lebanon, serving from 1943 to 1952. With the Sunni leader Riad Al Solh he agreed the unwritten National Pact of 1943, which shared the main offices of state among religious communities. His arrest by the French in November 1943 provoked the protests that won independence; corruption charges forced his resignation in 1952.
