Belitung

Also known as Billiton

Belitung is an island in the Java Sea off the east coast of Sumatra, part of the Indonesian province of the Bangka Belitung Islands. Like neighbouring Bangka it is rich in tin, which a Dutch company mined from the 1850s, making it one of the colony's main sources of the metal. The island was known in the colonial period as Billiton, the name taken by the mining company that later became part of BHP Billiton.
