Johannes van den Bosch

1780–1844 · 19th century · Also known as Van den Bosch

Johannes van den Bosch was a Dutch Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. In 1830 he introduced the Cultivation System in Java, which forced peasants to devote part of their land or labour to export crops for the colonial government. The system generated large profits for the Netherlands but caused great hardship in the Dutch Empire's colony.
