1860 · 19th century · Also known as Max Havelaar, or the Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company

Max Havelaar is a novel published in 1860 by Multatuli, the pen name of the former colonial official Eduard Douwes Dekker. Drawing on his service in Lebak on Java, it attacks the exploitation of Javanese peasants under the Dutch cultivation system and the local rulers who served it. It caused a sensation in the Netherlands and contributed to the later reform of colonial policy.
