1788–1847 · 19th century · Also known as Bento Gonçalves da Silva

Bento Gonçalves was a rancher and soldier of Rio Grande do Sul who led the Ragamuffin War, or Farroupilha, against the Empire of Brazil from 1835. He was elected president of the breakaway Riograndense Republic, though he spent part of the war as a prisoner. The rebels made peace with the empire in 1845, and he is remembered as a hero in southern Brazil.
