Bentivoglio family
The Bentivoglio were a family who ruled Bologna as unofficial lords for much of the 15th century, under the nominal sovereignty of the Papal States. After Giovanni I briefly seized power in 1401, Annibale, Sante and Giovanni II Bentivoglio dominated the city's government from the 1440s. Pope Julius II drove Giovanni II out in 1506, ending their rule.
