Battle of Fossalta

1249 · 13th century

The Battle of Fossalta was fought on 26 May 1249 near Modena between Guelph Bologna and its allies and the Ghibelline forces of Modena and the Emperor Frederick II. The Bolognese captured Frederick's son Enzo, King of Sardinia, who remained their prisoner in Bologna until his death in 1272. The defeat weakened the imperial cause in northern Italy.
