Betsileo

The Betsileo are a Malagasy people of the southern central highlands of Madagascar, around Fianarantsoa and Ambalavao. Skilled builders of terraced rice fields, they were organised in the 18th century into several kingdoms, including Lalangina, Isandra, Manandriana and Arindrano, which the Merina kingdom conquered in the early 19th century. They are one of the largest ethnic groups of Madagascar.
