Betsimitatatra
The Betsimitatatra is the plain of the Ikopa river below Antananarivo in the central highlands of Madagascar. From the late eighteenth century Andrianampoinimerina organised communal labour to drain it and build dikes, turning it into the main rice-growing land of Imerina. It remains a major rice area around the capital.
