Bissau
Bissau is the capital and largest city of Guinea-Bissau, on the estuary of the Geba river. The Portuguese founded a fortified trading post there in 1687, and the Fortaleza de São José da Amura was built in the 18th century. It replaced Bolama as the colonial capital in 1941, and in 1959 a dockworkers' strike at Pidjiguiti was violently suppressed, turning the PAIGC towards armed struggle.
