Black Hills
The Black Hills are a mountain range in South Dakota and Wyoming, sacred to the Lakota. The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 guaranteed them to the Great Sioux Reservation, but after gold was found during Custer's expedition of 1874 the United States seized them in 1877. The Lakota have refused a later court-awarded payment.
