Great Sioux War of 1876

1876–1877 · 19th century · Also known as Black Hills War

The Great Sioux War of 1876, also called the Black Hills War, was fought between the United States and the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne after gold was found in the Black Hills. Warriors under Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse won at the Rosebud and the Little Bighorn in June 1876, but winter campaigns wore them down. Crazy Horse surrendered in 1877, Sitting Bull fled to Canada, and the United States annexed the Black Hills.
