Battle of the Little Bighorn

1876 · 19th century · Also known as Custer's Last Stand · Part of the Great Sioux War of 1876

The Battle of the Little Bighorn was fought on 25–26 June 1876 near the Little Bighorn River in Montana. Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors led by Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and others destroyed five companies of the US 7th Cavalry under George Armstrong Custer, who was killed with all the men under his direct command. It was the greatest Native American victory of the Plains Wars, but it provoked a stronger US campaign that forced the Lakota onto reservations.
