Bobbio Abbey

614–1803 · 7th century

Bobbio Abbey was a monastery in the Trebbia valley of northern Italy, founded in 614 by the Irish missionary Columbanus on land granted by the Lombard king Agilulf. It became one of the great centres of learning of early medieval Europe, with a library of rare classical and Christian manuscripts. The abbey was suppressed under Napoleonic rule in 1803.
