Bolsa Família

2003– · 21st century

Bolsa Família is a Brazilian social programme that pays monthly cash transfers to poor families on condition that their children attend school and are vaccinated. Created in 2003 under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by merging earlier schemes, it reached about a quarter of the population and is credited with sharply reducing extreme poverty. Renamed Auxílio Brasil under Jair Bolsonaro, it was restored under its old name in 2023.
