Book of Lord Shang

4th–3rd century BCE · 4th century BCE · Also known as Shangjun shu

The Book of Lord Shang is a Chinese political text attributed to Shang Yang, the reforming minister of Qin, though it was largely compiled by his followers in the fourth and third centuries BCE. It argues that a state grows strong by concentrating its people on farming and war, enforcing strict laws with heavy punishments and rewards, and curbing merchants and scholars. It is a founding text of Legalism.
