Bou Craa

Also known as Bou Kra

Bou Craa is a phosphate mine in Western Sahara, about 100 kilometres south-east of El Aaiún. The deposits were discovered by Spanish geologists in 1947 and production began in the early 1970s, with ore carried to the coast on a conveyor belt about 100 kilometres long. The mine's wealth made the territory valuable to Spain and Morocco, and since 1975 it has been operated under Moroccan control.
