Green March

1975 · 20th century

The Green March was a mass demonstration organised by King Hassan II of Morocco in November 1975, in which about 350,000 unarmed Moroccans crossed into Spanish Sahara to press Morocco's claim to the territory. Spain, weakened by Franco's final illness, avoided confrontation and signed the Madrid Accords on 14 November, handing the territory to Morocco and Mauritania. The march began Moroccan control and a long war with the Polisario Front.
