Mohammed V of Morocco

1909–1961 · 20th century · Also known as Mohammed V

Mohammed V of Morocco was sultan from 1927 and the first king of independent Morocco. He supported the nationalist movement against the French protectorate, and his deposition and exile by France in 1953 provoked widespread unrest. Restored in 1955, he negotiated independence in 1956, took the title of king in 1957 and reigned until his death in 1961, when his son Hassan II succeeded.
