Hassan II of Morocco

1929–1999 · 20th century

Hassan II was King of Morocco from 1961 until his death in 1999, of the Alaouite dynasty. He introduced constitutions but kept firm power, surviving military coup attempts in 1971 and 1972 and repressing opponents during the period known as the Years of Lead. In 1975 he organised the Green March into Western Sahara, which Morocco then annexed.
