Western Sahara
Western Sahara is a sparsely populated desert territory on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa, formerly the Spanish Sahara. Its Sanhaja Berber nomads gave rise to the Almoravid movement in the 11th century. Since Spain withdrew in 1975 most of it has been held by Morocco, whose claim is contested by the Polisario Front.
