Brandenburg an der Havel
Brandenburg an der Havel is a city on the Havel in the German state of Brandenburg, west of Berlin. It began as Brenna, the chief stronghold of the Slavic Hevelli, where Otto I founded a bishopric in 948. Albert the Bear secured it in 1157, and it gave its name to the March of Brandenburg and, ultimately, to the modern state. Its cathedral island preserves medieval buildings.
