1944 · 20th century

The Brazzaville Conference was a meeting of Free French colonial officials opened by Charles de Gaulle at Brazzaville in January 1944. It recommended reforms in French Africa, including the end of forced labour and wider political representation, while rejecting self-government outside the French empire. It prepared the way for the French Union of 1946.
